Description
One of the rarest acoustic guitars you'll ever see ...PRS Prototype Acoustic Guitar made by Dana Bourgeois of Pantheon Guitars for Paul Reed Smith in 2000. One of only two prototypes made ... Paul Reed Smith owns the other one. This rare acoustic guitar was made in 2000-2001 by Pantheon Guitar and their master luthier Dana Bourgeois, at the request of Paul Reed Smith.Paul Reed Smith approached Pantheon Guitars in the late 1990s about building an acoustic guitar prototype with the hope of bringing a PRS acoustic guitar to market. According to the documentation that accompanies the guitar, Paul's only request was to "model it after an old Gibson J-45 that he loved, and to build it in a way that, when done, would fashion a guitar that was almost to the point of falling apart. His point was that he was going after a true vintage feel and sound and he wanted that reflected down to the very structure of the instrument."Paul gave Pantheon no other instructions, and Dana Bourgeois was given full authority to build the acoustic based on Paul's only request, as quoted above. Bourgeois choose a sloped-D design for the body, old-growth curly maple for the back and sides, and old-growth Adirondack spruce with bearclaw for the top. The 25-inch scale neck was hand-carved by Bourgeois out a perfectly grained block on Honduran mahogany. The headstock was modeled after the PRS Santana headstock, with an ebony veneer. The fingerboard is also ebony with dot markers. Other appointments include black body binding with b/w purflings, simple rosette, chrome Schaller tuners with ebony buttons, and bone nut and saddle. When it came to the neck, Bourgeois wanted to present Paul Reed Smith with a thin neck and a thick neck, so he made two exact prototypes, but with different necks. When he was done with both, they were presented to Paul Reed Smith for his examination. He chose to buy the prototype with the thinner neck, which we believe he still owns today. The other one is the acoustic guitar you see in this auction today. As we all know, Paul Reed Smith has still not built any acoustic guitars, and the two prototypes built by Dana Bourgeois and Pantheon Guitars are the closest he's come to ever building one. It is simply one of the world's most beautiful and rarest acoustic guitars. In the words of Patrick Theimer, President of Pantheon Guitar, it is one of the "best sounding acoustics to ever leave the Pantheon shop."This rare and beautiful guitar comes with extraordinary documentation and provenance from Pantheon Guitars, including an appraisal.
